SUS Union Square

When the architects for the restoration of New York's Union Square surveyed the range of available lighting fixtures, they opted for the sphere that is the essence of the design Series SUS. Not only did it blend well aesthetically with the old and new surroundings of that one hundred fifty year old site, it also offered the ruggedness and reliability that is a prime requisite for  lighting urban plazas.

A primary asset of the SUS is its mounting versatility. It works equally well as a post top luminaire, or, when suspended inverted from a bishop's crook post. This offers the architect further freedom in the lighting design of a park, plaza, or, street site.

This spherical globe is especially suited to clustering and melds beautifully with modern, or, traditional surroundings. High-strength cast aluminum base and polycarbonate globe.

SUS is designed to utilize a wide range of light sources, including High Intensity Discharge (HID) and incandescent. These light source families provide high efficiency in lumen output, service life and energy use.


Base shall be of high strength ASTM 356.1 cast aluminum. Seamless blow-molded polycarbonate, or, acrylic globe and base casting shall create a weather tight chamber for the ballast assembly. Spherical globe shall be easily removable for relamping and fixture maintenance.


Seamless blow-molded polycarbonate, or, acrylic globe. Available in symmetrical and asymmetrical light distribution. Asymmetrical light distribution utilizes internal borosilicate glass refractor.

Available in a wide range of lamp choices and wattage ratings including High Intensity Discharge (HID) and Incandescent.

Optical systems include Globe Only and Borosilicate Glass Refractor.


Meets UL 1598 for Safety. Luminaire shall have porcelain socket rated for 600V with 4kV pulse and uses a nickel-plated screw shell with spring-loaded center contact and lamp grips. Luminaires shall be prewired and factory tested. The ballast shall be a high power factor, constant wattage autotransformer type. The power factor shall be at least 90%.


To insure product durability, all exposed metallic surfaces shall be finished with a high performance coating consisting of high gloss Super Durable polyester powder coat paint to be applied utilizing a multistage process that includes phosphate pretreatment, electrostatic powder application, and convection curing. Paint shall be weather, corrosion, abrasion, and UV resistant in compliance with the American Architectural Manufacturers Association’s specification AAMA 2604-05. Color to be specified.


Mounts to a 3” diameter by 3” tall tenon. Three (3) 3/8”-16 UNC stainless steel allen head cup point set screws secure luminaire to post top tenon. All mounting hardware shall be stainless steel.
